In 1988, WorkSafeBC (Workers Compensation Board of BC) introduced legislation that assured workers they would have information concerning the safe handling of hazardous chemicals available to them in the workplace. The Workplace Hazardous Material Information System — or WHMIS — requires that hazardous products are properly labeled and Material Safety Data Sheets are provided for such products by the supplier. Legislation also dictates that employers must train and educate their staff on the hazards associated with using controlled products in the workplace.

For each and every hazardous product that is used in a workplace, employers must ensure that there is a valid Materials Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) accessible to employees at all times.
